Chico, Watsonville, Hanford Conclude California Sprint Week Thurs, Fri, & Saturday

Damion Gardner of Concord, Calif. is back atop the AMSOIL USAC/CRA Sprint Car standings and leads the All Coast Construction “California Sprint Week” into Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico this Thursday night, Sept. 8, for the 63rd Annual “Gold Cup Race of Champions” at Silver Dollar also includes the USAC Western States Midgets on the event card.

On Friday, Sept. 9, the Sprint Cars head to Watsonville’s Ocean Speedway before venturing to Keller Auto Speedway at Kings Fairgrounds on Saturday, Sept. 10, where the “California Sprint Week” champion will be crowned.

Gardner regained the USAC/CRA point lead by virtue of his Monday night victory at Petaluma (Calif.) Speedway. He passed Geoff Ensign on lap 19 and led the rest of the way in his Scott Sales Company/Weld Racing Spike/J & D. Ensign’s second-place finish put him second behind Gardner in the California Sprint Week points by just 12 markers. Chad Boespflug took third ahead of Kevin Thomas Jr. and Chase Johnson.

Ryan Bernal of Hollister, Calif. and Thomas Meseraull of San Jose, Calif. scored victories in last week’s 9th Annual “Louie Vermeil Classic” at Calistoga, Calif. Bernal passed Gardner on lap nine and led the rest of Saturday’s 30-lapper in his Metal Works/Tri-L Mandarin Ranch ART/S & S machine to beat Gardner, Carson Macedo, Richard Vander Weerd and Tanner Thorson.

Meseraull won Sunday’s 29-lap (curfew-shortened) race at Calistoga in his SportClips/LRB Manufacturing Maxim/Kistler. Richard Vander Weerd was second ahead of Ensign, Austin Williams and Boespflug.

USAC AMSOIL Sprint Car National Champion Robert Ballou - Saturday’s Woodland Auto Display fast qualifier - suffered a neck injury in a crash during the feature event. His condition continues to improve and hopes are that he will be released sometime this week.

Other Woodland Auto Display fast qualifiers were Tanner Thorson (Sunday) and Chase Johnson (Monday).

BR Motorsports/King Racing Products Hard Chargers were Jac Haudenschild (Saturday), Ensign (Sunday) and Austin Williams (Monday).
